Are blind people changing diapers?

image

I couldn’t help but wonder whether or not blind folks are actually changing diapers these days.  That’s not a job that I’d want to be feeling around for– I’m pretty sure you need eyes for something like that.  I noticed braille on the side of this changing station in the bathroom at Panera.  So that made me wonder, would a blind person change the diaper of their child, exchange money with the cashier, and then eat a sandwich?  I just hope their hands are clean.

Another night in the ER

image

After my last appendectomy at Fort Belvoir, it looks like I needed another reminder of why the military medical system rocks…  I sliced my hand open tonight when a bottle broke while cooking and they got me all stitched up in under an hour!  The staff at DeWitt Hospital is absolutely awesome and I’m thankful to have had such great care!

Funeral Catering?

Just read a great article in the New York Times about an Australian chef who is trying to revolutionize Thai cooking. He’s resurrecting recipes from the dead by researching Thai funeral books passed down from the older generations. Makes me wonder– is there potentially a booming market for funeral catering out there? You could get new recipes and then cook what Grandma used to make before she passed away– sort of like a last supper for the family. I would have enjoyed that when my grandma passed away. Don’t we all associate great food with our grandparents? I’m afraid this will change though with passing generations, as all my mom is known for is burning the rolls at Thanksgiving…

Never Stop Searching

©2010 Prescott PaulinI’m currently traveling in Southeast Asia and realized a small but important point in life… Never stop searching for the perfect fruit.

Regardless of whatever “fruits” of life you’re enjoying, I can honestly say that I had nearly given up expecting quality from the local produce.  But I tasted the *perfect* banana today.  Without a doubt, it was the best one I’ve ever had.

My optimism would never be possible if I stopped reaching out to try the local food and try new things.  It has taught me to never stop searching– because after enough trying you are bound to find something great.

STRATFOR: Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Threat Assessment

By Scott Stewart and Nate Hughes

Over the past decade there has been an ongoing debate over the threat posed by electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to modern civilization. This debate has been the most heated perhaps in the United States, where the commission appointed by Congress to assess the threat to the United States warned of the dangers posed by EMP in reports released in 2004 and 2008. The commission also called for a national commitment to address the EMP threat by hardening the national infrastructure. Continue reading

Bolthouse Farms’ New POG Juice

image

I was pleasantly surprised to see a bottle of Pineapple, Orange, Guava Juice in the cooler at Giant today. This concoction was originally called POG by the Hawaiians at Haleakala Dairy on Maui, Hawaii.  Bolthouse Farms certainly hit the spot by bringing back an old favorite from Hawaii to the mainland, but with the fresher juices they are known for.  I grew up drinking this stuff and am ecstatic to see a new version without all the high fructose corn syrup (hfcs) in it!  If your grocer carries their juice products, make sure they’re stocking this variety!

You might also remember an old trend back in the nineties where the caps to the bottles inspired the fad game “Pogs.” I did some research and dug up some history behind the game: Continue reading

STRATFOR: Arizona, Borderlands, and US-Mexican Relations

By George Friedman

Arizona’s new law on illegal immigration went into effect last week, albeit severely limited by a federal court ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court undoubtedly will settle the matter, which may also trigger federal regulations. However that turns out, the entire issue cannot simply be seen as an internal American legal matter. More broadly, it forms part of the relations between the United States and Mexico, two sovereign nation-states whose internal dynamics and interests are leading them into an era of increasing tension. Arizona and the entire immigration issue have to be viewed in this broader context. Continue reading
